University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology presentsTraditional navigation in the Western Pacific : a search for pattern
The material presented here is an online adaptation of an article which first appeared in the Museum's Expedition Magazine vol 29 no 3 (1987), authored by Steve Thomas and Ward H. Goodenough. It was adapted for online viewing by Phil Chase and others. The article discusses the art of navigation in the Central Caroline Islands where, lacking writing, local navigators have had to commit to memory their knowledge of the stars, sailing directions, seamarks, and how to read the waves and clouds to determine currents and predict weather.
