To meet the aim of Te Puna Web Directory, the following criteria are used to select New Zealand and Pacific Island Internet resources.

Substantial coverage Sites of national or regional significance within the defined geographical coverage Sites that contain largely advertising and/or contact information Sites where all significant information has restricted access, i.e. password protected Sites promoting illegal acts (e.g. bomb making, paedophilia, sexually explicit sites etc) Government sites including New Zealand Crown Companies Iwi sites Academic sites Individual New Zealand school websites (to avoid duplication with Te Kete Ipurangi site) Electronic journal sites that provide at a minimum content page information Representative Coverage Organisations' sites (e.g. incorporated societies, associations) Commercial sites that provide financial and organisational information on the company (e.g. annual reports, financial statements or company performance reports) Commercial sites that provide information of significant general interest (e.g. art works, transport timetables, directories, local history) Major New Zealand tourism and travel websites Other New Zealand tourism and travel websites Pacific Island tourist sites that provide a significant amount of information on the nation Personal sites where they contribute to the documentary record of the nation's experience Most personal sites
In general the directory will point to the web site as a whole. Large web sites may be listed at a significant sub-level, for example, the departmental web pages of a university web site.
Inclusion or exclusion of a web site within this directory will be based upon the National Library of New Zealand Collections Policy and these selection criteria.
